Maui County Healthcare Heroes Seal The Deal, End Strike ???⚕️?
Almost 500 healthcare workers in Maui County came together to ratify a new contract and end their two-month long strike. The United Public Workers union reported that 87% of its members voted in favor of the new three-year contract deal.
The healthcare heroes, who work at facilities such as the Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital, and Lanai Community Hospital, made a difficult decision to walk out on February 22 in demand of better pay and conditions for all workers, including nurses aides, respiratory therapists, licensed practical nurses, housekeepers, and cooks.
Kalani Werner, the UPW State Director, stated that the new contract was put together after months of hard work and determination, and that it reflects the sacrifices made by the healthcare workers during the strike.
One significant component of the new contract includes pay-scale adjustments for all job classifications, at least a 10.5% wage increase for all members, and a lump sum payment for all members.
Now that the healthcare heroes have sealed the deal, they can get back to doing what they do best: taking care of the people of Maui County. ???⚕️?⚕️
However, it is important to remember that we must continue to support our essential workers who have put in so much time and effort during the pandemic. So, let’s make sure to show our appreciation and say “mahalo” for all the work they have done! ???
